Things I've eaten
On occasion I get taken for a really nice meal here (courtesy of family members who drop into town). I figured some of you would be more interested (than perhaps other readers) in what gets consumed, and to properly describe some of the courses requires more image and narrative space than I wanted to take up on the main blog page, so I've started this ancillary section instead. Other foods that are interesting (but not necessarily part of an elaborate dinner) may also go up here; we'll see how it goes.
Entries are likely to be sporadic, so I'll try to put a note in the regular blog entries anytime something gets added here -- that's also where you'd have to leave any comments, as there's no dedicated space on these pages (also, due to the nature of the software I'm using, the layouts are even more limiting than on the blog, so you might see some odd formatting. I'll try to keep the image file sizes down for faster loading, but expect the pages to be long).
--June/July 08: Vietnamese food in Vietnam, Week Two. Food from Hoi An and Saigon.
--June 08: Vietnamese food in Vietnam, Week One. Good eats from Hanoi and Hue.
--June 08: A selection of dishes from other parts of Yunnan (Chinese and other minorities), and especially Tibet (sort of).
--8/6/08: Local food in Kunming. I think there were some Yi (regional ethnic minority) dishes in here, but I can't swear to it.
--16/4/08: Stingray. Not much else to be said.
--12/4/08: Japanese in Singapore. Just a restaurant in a dinky local mall, but with above-average food. Including sticks, Japanese-style.
--8/4/08: Sichuan. Sort of.
--21/3/08: "Nouveau" Shanghainese. Before you ask, no, I don't know what the difference is between modern and nouveau.
--20/3/08: French! Ooh, desserts I actually like...
--16/3/08: "Modern" Chinese. I think the menu is mostly Southern dishes, but I'm not positive. We chose a small tasting menu that included some decisively nontraditional preparations.
--Mar 08: Cantonese-Shanghainese fare. I actually ended up at this place twice in one week, so there are lots of pictures here.
--10/3/08: Japanese tempura. Probably the swankiest place I've been in Shanghai so far.
--Feb 08: Food in Hangzhou. Local delicacies include pork belly and beggar's chicken.
